Red Squirrels - Photos by Keith Rawling

The best time to get close enough to photograph the Red Squirrel is in the autumn when they can be seen on the ground searching for fallen nuts and acorns. At this time they are changing into their darker winter coats. With a tendency to stay in the shadows - they are shy - and move very quickly indeed.

This all adds up to high ISO's, fast shutter speeds and longish lenses - a challenging combination.

In Autumn you do get the advantage of dramatic lighting, warm colours plus the satisfaction of achieving good results under difficult conditions.
In summer the Squirrel's coat is quite a different colour. Also they are hard to spot, living mostly in the high canopy.
They are often tempted to the bird feeders in the Dorset Wildlife Trust Area.
